Casa de
la Luz Hospice has become an integral and very
special part of my life. I am so proud to be a
part of an organization that provides loving care,
dignity and respect during this most difficult and
final journey of life. If I can
provide one moment more pleasant, or if I can help
bring a moment of peace to dying, then I have truly
been blessed.

Volunteerism - the Essence of Human Caring
Hospice volunteers are highly respected
and valued members of the Casa hospice team who generously
give of themselves and their time. They each bring unique
gifts to those they serve. Casa volunteers who provide
direct patient care have experiences that are full of joy,
meaning, hope and sharing. Others experience the
satisfaction of assisting with office, educational, or other
practical, non-medical services. |
 |
Volunteers who wish to provide direct
service to hospice patients may:
- Provide companionship and emotional
support.
- Allow a caregiver to enjoy some
respite or to attend to matters outside of the home.
- Assist with a vigil team that ensures
a patient is not alone.
- With appropriate expertise, provide a
complementary therapy.
- Help with patient correspondence.
- Run errands.
- Share in game or card playing.
- Provide bereavement care.
Each Casa volunteer
has successfully completed a 30-hour
specialized end of life training
program. Volunteers are selected,
supervised, and well supported by the
volunteer coordinator. They are
considered full members of the Casa
team. Are you interested in becoming a
Casa hospice volunteer? We would be
delighted to hear from you. Please call
our volunteer coordinator with questions
or to schedule an appointment,

"My feelings for my volunteer work are somewhat
paradoxical. I am happy to spend time with my
patients, fully present in the moment with them,
exchanging our views as individuals or listening to
their stories and how they are feeling, yet I feel
the gravity that comes when life transitions into
death. It amazes me that two strangers can
meet and grow to care for and confide in each other."

"It is a privilege (to be allowed) to share
the last parts of a persons life when they are most
open, most authentic. We learn, from sharing
experiences, how to more fully live.

"Whether it is IPU, Kanmar Place or a care
home, my eleven pound volunteer Butzie makes friends
wherever we go! (I am the volunteer at the end of
the leash.) Her happy Havanese prance brightens the
day and provides a diversion for staff, visitors and
patients. We do a small job that gives us big
pleasure!

"Supporting a patient at the time of death
or simply keeping an agitated patient calm utilizes
my natural abilities in caring for another. I
am very honored to be a part of Casa de la Luz's
vigil team."
